Futile [G]

This story contains minor spoilers for the Season 6 episode, Collective, and is based on the opening scenes. The dénouement is entirely mine, though. Please don't be misled into thinking the episode is more exciting than it really is.

For those who haven't seen the episode, and wouldn't otherwise know what's going on, here is a brief account of the opening scenes:

Chakotay, Tom, Harry, and Neelix are on board the Delta Flyer on a mission of the utmost importance: teaching Neelix poker. So intent are they on this vital task that trivial matters, like piloting the shuttle, go by the board. Their mission is brought to an abrupt halt when they end up inside a Borg cube that no one had noticed until it almost mowed them down.

But where is Harry?

"Sir!"

Chakotay and Tom stopped arguing, and turned to see the reason for Neelix's urgent tone.

In the middle of the assimilation chamber was a biobed, and on it ...

"No one we know, anyway," said Chakotay quickly.

You mean it's not Harry, thought Tom, going to the biobed. But there was something familiar about the figure, its face almost obscured by implants.

"Some assimilation that went wrong," said Tom, lifting one of the lifeless arms.

The log would show the discovery of a dead, partially assimilated male. Species unknown. No need for any further details.

Tom gently lowered Kashyk's arm.
