Blues

'The blues isn't about feeling better: it's about making other people feel worse. And making a few bucks along the way.'
(Bleedin' Gums Murphy in The Simpsons, Episode title: Lisa is sad)
The Simpsons is ©Fox

I was a child when I first heard the Blues, and I can remember to this day how it felt. I was blown away. It didn't get me in the head. It didn't get me in the heart. It got me fair and square in the guts. If that isn't your experience too, then it's probably better to forget it. Or what you heard wasn't the Blues.

Blues Lyrics On Line
Besotted as I am, I have to admit that it's not always easy to make out the lyrics of a blues. This site has been invaluable. Also includes a FAQ and links.

Harry's Blues Lyrics Online
A site "dedicated to blues music and nothing but the blues". If you couldn't find the lyrics you wanted at the previous site, you'll probably find them here.

Chanson

'Moi, j'aime le music-hall' ( (Trenet).

Chanson is French for song, but the word is also used to mean a particular type of popular song. Think Piaf, Trenet, Aznavour, Bécaud, Rossi, Gréco, Chevalier et al.

Chanson lyrics have an intellectual dimension, a quality of realism that, for me, adds to the charm and interest and of the song. Unfortunately, those which have been translated into English, and become major hits in the English-speaking world, tend, in my opinion, to suffer from an excess of syrup.

Sites devoted to the greatest names in Chanson, are, rather surprisingly, few and far between. This is what I've found so far.

Edith Piaf and her Paris
There can be few in the English-speaking world who have not heard of Piaf. This site includes a biography and audio files.

Chansons françaises et francophones

A comprehensive collection of lyrics. The site is in French.

Classical

Baroque

If all music but baroque disappeared tomorrow, we would still be rich indeed. I love its logic, and the passion contained within that logic. It is like a journey into a labyrinth. It is impossible to get lost (a labyrinth is not the same thing as a maze), and once you reach the centre, you turn round and retrace your steps. But, many people believe, the labyrinth offers a journey of self-discovery, and when you leave the still centre and return to the beginning, you are changed on a profound level. That is a pretty good description of the effect baroque music has on me.

Bach Central Station
A directory of JS Bach resources on the Internet. There are over 300 sites listed, so anything else from me would be redundant.

Greek

Rebetiko
Rebetiko (plural:rebetika) has been described as the Greek urban blues. Forget Yiannis and His Bouzouki All-Stars that you heard on your two week package holiday in Corfu. It doesn't even come close. This is harsh and raw and painful ... even if you don't know what they're singing about. It's inextricably bound up with the history of modern Greece, and this site includes a Rebetiko Timeline to help you understand, not only its origins, but why it was the music of the marginalized and the dispossessed.

Mikis Theodorakis Home Page
Yes, he wrote Zorba's Dance, but it is sad to think that so many people know no more of him than this. Surprisingly, this is the only site I have been able to find.

Sephardic

Judy Frankel
The moment I heard Judy Frankel's voice (there are audio samples at the site) I knew that if I could have only one CD of Sephardic music it would be one of hers (she's recorded four to date AFAIK).

Judy's beautiful voice has fallen silent. She died of cancer on 20th March 2008. The world is a poorer place.
